equipping Christ’s church to expand His Kingdom in coastal SoCal
on mission where we live, labor, learn, & laugh
a big vision
1 - A REVERSAL OF THE CHURCH’S STATISTICAL DECLINE
We believe it is Christ’s desire to see today’s church in coastal SoCal recapture the way of Christ and his Apostles by which His Spirit expanded the early church so that there is a rapid increase in the number of zealous disciples.
2 - A MISSION OUTPOST IN EVERY NEIGHBORHOOD
We believe it is Christ’s desire to see disciples intentionally gathering together in homes, workplaces, campuses, and recreational places for the purposes of building up Christ’s Body and serving as light in darkness to the benefit of their neighbors.
3 - A CHRIST-PROCLAIMING CHURCH WITHIN EVERY ENCLAVE
We believe it is Christ’s desire to continue the work of the Great Commission which results in the establishing of churches present in every enclave of SoCal.
4 - ALL THE RESIDENTS OF COASTAL SOCAL HEAR THE GOSPEL MESSAGE
Since this is Christ’s desire, we see our unique role as helping equip disciples to utilize and develop their various vocations for the continuation of Christ’s ministry.
the reason
Jesus through my VOCATION
Christ continues his ministry through the Royal Priesthood of all believers (1 Peter 2:9). Luther recaptured this concept during the Protestant Reformation in his doctrine of vocation, which had sweeping societal effects in Post-Medieval Europe. He described that as every Christian serves through his various vocations, (parenting, student, worker, etc.) they become the physical means through which Christ loves and serves our neighbors. Through this vocational life, we find our purpose in Christ and to the benefit of our neighbors. We use a pinwheel as a memory and teaching aid. We must again recapture Luther’s doctrine of vocation and train Christians to live as the Royal Priesthood. Is the societal impact this created in the 1st and 16th centuries possible today? Absolutely, with the Holy Spirit’s help.
Jesus for this COMMUNITY
They will know we are Christ’s disciples because of the love we have for one another (John 13:35; 2 Thess. 1:3). The settings of vocation — our homes, workplaces, campuses, and places of recreation — become outposts from which the love we have for one another and our neighbors becomes evident. They are where disciples are made and from and within which mission is intentionally engaged. We come together in these places with intentionality, and we invite others into the way of Christ and his Apostles. Through our life together, the Holy Spirit gives us spiritual gifts to use for the purpose of strengthening our families, building up the church, providing for needs, collectively loving our neighborhoods, and most importantly, proclaiming the Gospel.
Jesus establishing His CHURCH
The Holy Spirit’s expansion of the early church through mission and ministry of the Apostles and the church gives us a strategy for strengthening our existing churches and planting new ones. This happens when Christ-proclaiming local churches grow in their capacity to make disciples, and thus see the church grow, leaders emerge, and the Gospel spread. We utilize, in particular, a strategy developed from the study of Paul’s missionary work to help strengthen and plant churches. We’ve developed a 6-block strategy to help establish strong churches. Each block builds on the other. The end desire is to see churches that are healthy to the point that they are actively sending disciples for the purpose of expanding the church. Our approach isn’t to merely plant churches at the expense of strengthening existing churches, or visa versa. Both approaches are necessary for the Church in coastal SoCal to be healthy and growing.
Jesus raising up more HARVEST WORKERS
Paul lands in the bustling city of Ephesus and immediately finds 12 disciples who he baptizes and begins preparing to join him in his mission work. This continued for two years, so that all the residents of Asia heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. (Acts 19:10). Can you imagine a tentmaker (or any craftsman or business owner) developing disciples in a way that all the residents of the entire region around them heard the Gospel? We dream of building 4 “Tyrannus Schools” centers located along the US-101/I-405 corridor between Santa Barbara and San Clemente where Coastal Mission Society churches and leaders can come together for the purpose of developing leaders, training bi-vocational missionary leaders and teams in the trades or culinary arts, theology of mission, as well as missiological practice. This will be hands-on learning that not only teaches mission workers necessary skills to provide a living, but also missionary skills to build the Kingdom.
